What are my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act?
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act was established in 1978 to eliminate abusive debt collection practices. The Act applies only to the collection of consumer debts-those incurred for personal, family, or household purposes.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has primary responsibility for the enforcement of this Act. This FTC FAQ is an excellent resource for questions about the Act and your rights. You also may wish to visit the FTC home page.
